The Silent Update Problem
In our Fall 2024 product post, we shared how Google Connect was making life easier for Google Calendar users—speeding up subscriptions, removing mobile roadblocks, and laying the groundwork for a more transparent calendar experience.
We also hinted at a future feature that would show you exactly when and how your calendars were refreshed, so subscribers never have to guess if they're looking at the latest events. Well, that day is now here 🎉.
Most calendars update quietly in the background, which can leave subscribers wondering:
- When was my last update?
- Are these events current?
- What exactly changed?
For events that matter, this lack of clarity can lead to frustration—or worse, missed events.
🎉 Introducing Last Updated
Behind the scenes, Stanza regularly refreshes subscribers’ calendars. Now, whenever we detect an update, we add a Last Updated timestamp to all events in the calendar.
How It Works
Behind the scenes, calendars apps ping Stanza regularly for event changes. We keep track of when a subscriber's calendar last pinged us to automatically apply a Last Updated timestamp to every event.
Where to look for it
- Open any event from your Stanza-powered calendar.
- Scroll down to the event description.
- Spot the clock emoji (🕒) followed by the exact time your calendar app last updated.
Google Connect Users
For subscribers using Google Connect, their calendars are “smart” updated—meaning we only refresh events when actual schedule changes occur. They’ll get the most accurate read on their Library page, where they can see the Last Updated status at a glance.
Why this Matters
- Clarity: No more guessing if your calendar is up to date.
- Trust: Whether it’s a rescheduled game, a new meeting, or a change in a TV show release, subscribers will know that they have the most accurate information.
- Transparency: We’re not just updating silently; we’re letting subscribers know when it happened.
